Erin Tomson grew up riding and working on her family’s boarding farm in Pullman, Washington. She is a graduate A from Palouse Hills Pony Club and has been Eventing since the age of 9. She has competed through the Preliminary level on several horses, coached riders through Training Level, and successfully completed the Training Level Classic 3-Day Event at Rebecca Farm in 2017. Erin competes and volunteers regularly at Area VII events, develops young horses, and has a small lesson program at her family’s farm. Erin is on the Board of Governors for the United States Eventing Association, as well as the leadership team for Strides for Equality Equestrians. Her focus in both organizations is to develop sustainable grassroots Eventing programs and actively work to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in equestrian sports. Erin balances her horse activities with her job as a strategic communication professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. She earned her Ph.D. (2010) in communication, and her teaching and research focuses on crisis prevention and response planning for nonprofit organizations, public relations and strategic messaging, and creating an inclusive learning environment for any and all types of students – in the classroom and in the saddle!
